Bamboo Rafting Along Pai River, Mae Hong Son



       How to get there: From Pal Town, Mae Hong Son, there will be transport services to the rafting starting point at Ban Huay San Not, at Khong River, about 65 kilometers from Mae Hong Son Town. It takes about one and a half hour to the river. From Khong River, the course will run along to Pal River, and finish at Mae Hong Son Town. Most travellers do not come back to Pal again, but continue to other attractions in town or board the plane to Chiang Mai instead.
       Location: The start of Pal River rafting is at Amphoe Pal, Mae Hong Son, about 111 kilometers from Mae Hong Son Town and 99 kilometers from Chiang Mai.
      Characteristics: This river is rather narrow and winding, so sometimes the water is very fast and sharp. The river runs pass Amphoe Pal, Amphoe Pang Mapha, and Mae Hong Son Town, before flowing out at Salawin River. The total distance of this river course is 180 kilometers.
Difficulty: Level     3-4
Distance: 45-50 kilometers


      Highlights: The beginning of the rafting trip is at Ban Huay San Not, along the small Khong River that will flow to Pal River. At first the rafting is quite a slow and comfortable warm up. After having lunch at the bank of the riven the boat will pass Susa Water-fall where you may enjoy a good swimming. Then the raft will go along until you reach the camping site in the late afternoon.
      The journey continues after the breakfast, now you are around the end of Khong River. For about 2 hours you will pass the end of Khong River and enter Pai River. Once you are in Pal River you will find that the over becomes broader and exciting. There are 11 rapids along the course, each is about 30-300 meters long, and some are quite difficult especially the last one called "Pal Keed".
      The journey reaches its end for some times after lunch. Several travellers choose to enjoy swimming there for a little while. This point is within the Mae Surin Waterfall Forest Park, only around 10 kilometers from Mae Hong Son Town.
      Beside the two days one night program; you can also choose one day program, or three days two nights program as well.
      Caution: Because the water is quite harsh, you should follow the officer's advices strictly, especially when you pass large, strong rapids. Moreover, due to the length of the river, you should prepare yourself for an overnight camping in the forest as well.
The Best Season: July to January
      Rainy season: The water is exceptionally full and runs so fast that you may feel like windsurfing on the rubber boat.
      Cold season: The water is getting low, so that you may be able to walk on some parts of the river.

Anecdotes :
- Pai River originates from Thong Chai Hill and Dan Laos Hill, the winding river runs pass Amphoe Pai in Mae Hong Son first. This adventurous rafting course demands an overnight camping, but guarantees utmost enjoyment.
- The river turns faster and harsher when the boat enters Pai River, which is broader and more winding.
- From rafting here, you may get an unexpected bonus, that is the fresh and glowing skin from the natural mudbath.
- This part is called "Pal Keed", the two hills that stand at both sides of the river. This last rapid is like the terminal gate of this exciting adventure.
