Wat Yannawa is located on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, on Charoen Krung Road, Yannawa District. It was an ancient temple dating from the Ayutthaya Period. Originally named Wat Khok Khwai. In the Thonburi Period it was raised to the status of a royal temple and was renamed as Wat Khok Krabeu. Later, King Rama I ordered the construction of a new phra ubosot.
The name of the temple was changed again to Wat Yannawa after King Rama III had the temple renovated and a chedi constructed to resemble a junk to remind later generations of what a junk looked like.
The Yannawa junk is 21 wa 2 sok (43 meters) long from stem to poop royal as measured on deck, 18 wa 1 sok (37 meters) long as measured along the ground, 4 wa 3 sok (9.5 meters) wide, and 2 wa 3 sok (5.5 meters) tall at midship. There are two chedi, one large and one small, on the junk. On the poop royal there are a statue of Phra Vessandara along with his children Phra Khanha and Chalee, recalling the scene in the story of Phra Vessandara in which he exhorts his son and daughter to join him in making merit, which he likened to a junk that would take humanity to Nirvana.
The phra ubosot, constructed in the First Reign, has an important painting on a door that was executed on the orders of King Rama III depicting a large Krathong used in the Loy Phra Pratheep ceremony and a type of jar used during this period for offering new rice to monks.
